PROCEDURE: Activities + Time Steps Purposes Materials Interactions Warm up (1 min) - T begins the class with some common greetings by saying: “Good morning, class. How are you keeping today?” - T checks the attendance: “The monitor, who is absent today?” Lead in: - T says: “Today, we are going to continue learning Unit 9, pronunciation”. UNIT 9: PRESERVING THE ENVIRONMENT Lesson 2 – LANGUAGE – PRONUNCIATION - T asks SS to open their book page 40. Class organization Zoom. T – S Presentation (8 mins) - T asks Ss to do task 2: Activity 1 (Task 2): Listen and put a mark (‘) before the stressed syllable in each word. - T asks Ss to read the word in rows paying attention to the difference between the sound clusters. - Play the recording and let Ss listen to the sentences and circle the word they hear. * Suggested answer: - T asks Ss look at the stress of these words to give the rule and examples: “Can you work out any rules to put stress in three-syllable nouns and give some examples? - T shows the rule to put stress in three-syllable nouns. - T asks Ss to look at the screen and give an example for each rule. - Stress falls on the 2nd syllable when: + The last syllable has a short vowel and the 2nd syllable has a diphthong or a long vowel. Eg: pagoda/pəˈɡəʊdə/; banana/bəˈnɑːnə/ + The last syllable has a vowel /əʊ/ and the 2nd syllable has a diphthong or a long vowel. Eg: potato/pəˈteɪtəʊ/; kimono/kɪˈməʊnəʊ/ - Stress falls on the 1st syllable when the 2nd and last syllable have a short vowel. Eg: family /'fæmili/; cinema/ˈsɪnəmə/ - The syllable before –tion or –sion is usually stressed. Eg: tradition /trəˈdɪʃn/ Help Ss to identify the rule to put stress in three-syllable nouns.
