T checks the attendance:
“The monitor, who is absent today?”

Lesson 2: Language – Grammar: “Reported speech”
T asks Ss to open their book page 40.
Class organization.
Help students stay awake before starting a new lesson.

(5 mins)
Task 1: Read the following sentences from the conversation between Nam and his father in GETTING STARTED. Write the names of the speakers.
T asks Ss to look at their book to read through the 6 statements.
Let’s Ss go back to the Getting Started to check the information.
T instructs the 1st sentence:
(read through the statement => looking back to the Getting Started to find out the same information => can see Nam is the speaker of this sentence) =>> 1-Nam
T asks Ss to do this task into 2 minutes
T haves Ss compare the answers with their partner.
T checks and corrects the answers orally with some Ss at random.
*Suggested answers:
1. Nam
4. Nam’s father
2. The editor
5. Nam

6. Nam’s father
- T gives some example about reported speech (rewrite the sentence 1):
→ Nam said that he was writing for his school newsletter.
- T asks Ss to look at these statements and point out for Ss the form of reported speech.
*Explain the grammar point:
REPORTED SPEECH
You can use reported speech to repeat what people have previously said.
🡪 Form:
S + say(s)/said + (that) + S + V
*Note:
+ The quotation marks are no needed for writing reported speech.
+ Verbs in reported speech usually go back one tense, and imperative verbs change to infinitive.
+ Say/ Tell can be used in reported speech, Say does not need an object, but Tell does.
Introduce the content of the lesson for Ss.
Help Ss to remember the theory.
Help Ss be ready for the next activity.

(6 mins)
Task 2: Change the direct speech statements into reported speech. Make any changes, if necessary.
T explains the task requirement.
T gets Ss to work individually first to do the task into 3 minutes, then work in pairs to compare the answers.
T asks Ss to give the answers (go to the board).
T checks and corrects the answers.
T asks them to give clues for their answers.
