I. Aims:

1. Knowledge: By the end of the unit, students can gain knowledge about “inventions”.

2. Skills: By the end of this unit, students can:

- use nouns and phrases related to the topic Inventions.

- understand the formation of compound nouns and their meanings.

- identify the stress patterns of compound nouns and noun groups.

- use the gerunds and infinitives to talk about the uses or purposes of something.

- use the present perfect tense to describe an event or action happening in the past but having a result in the present.

- read a text about inventions based on nature for the main idea and specific information.

- talk about some unique inventions, their uses and their benefits.

- listen to an interview for specific information.

- make an outline before writing a short paragraph about the benefits of an invention.

II. Methods: - The whole lesson: mainly communicative, learner-centered.

III. Teaching aids: textbook, pieces of papers, handout, slide show and cassette.

IV. Anticipated problems: Some new technical terms may make Ss difficult to understand, so T should explain when necessary.

UNIT 5: INVENTIONS
I. Aims: 
1. Knowledge: By the end of the unit, students can gain knowledge about “inventions”.

Computers and our lives
1. Objectives: - getting to know the topic of unit 5, vocabulary related to inventions, and two grammar points.
2. Teaching aids: textbook, slide show and cassette/speakers.

1. Warm up
 (6 minutes) 
GAME: What is this?
- Teacher divides the class into 2 groups. 
- There is a picture which is hidden under 6 pieces. Each piece is equivalent to a question. If students answer question correctly, they can open a part of the picture.
- The winner is the group who can tell the name of the picture.
- Questions under pictures are:
1. Telephone was invented by _____.
A. The Wright Brothers
B. Benjamin Franklin
C. Marie Curie
D. Alexander Graham Bell
2. Who discovered penicillin?
A. Albert Einstein
B. Alexander Fleming
C. Isaac Newton
D. Biro Brothers

4. Find the word whose underlined part is pronounced differently.

2. New lesson
(30 minutes)
I. Listen and read
- Before playing the recording, teacher asks students some related questions about the picture in the textbook.
 1. Can you guess the relationship between two people in the picture?
 2. What are they talking about?
- Tell them the two people in the picture are Phong and his father; they are talking about some devices such as smart phone, tablet or laptop. 
- Play the recording and then give time for silent reading and ask students to underline the words that they don’t know and try to guess the part of speech of these words.
- Call on two students to read the dialogue aloud. Teacher can give comment on students’ pronunciation if necessary. 
* New words:
- Teacher asks a student to write the word that they don’t know on the board and gives some explanations quickly.
- Teacher prepares some certain words to emphasize:
 + invent (v) – invention (n) – inventor (n)
 + reward (v)
 + definitely (adv)
 + research (v)
 + assignment (n)
- If students want to know some words like “generous, portable, economical, versatile”, tell them not to worry about the new vocabulary or grammar points. The new items will be dealt with after Activity 3.
II. Answer the questions
- Ask students to read the conversation again and think of the answers to the questions.
- Assist students to understand the questions by underlining key words in Activity 2. 
- Get students, in pairs, to ask and answer questions about the conversation and switch roles to ask and answer.
- Call several pairs to read the questions and their answers. Ask others to give comment. Teacher can use extra boards or call some students to go to the board and write down the answer.
- Check the answers in front of the class and provide the correct ones if necessary.
* Suggested answers:
 1. He promised to reward Phong if he passed the English test.
 2. Because his old mobile phone is still good. 
 3. Computers have changed our lives in many ways: faster communication (emails), free entertainment (online games), convenient shopping (online shopping), etc.
 4. He will use his laptop for listening to music, playing games, chatting with his friends, playing games, researching topics on the Web and typing his assignments.
 5. Yes, I agree. Because laptop is a useful device and I can use it to do many things. (Answers may vary.) 
III. Matching
- Have students read the dialogue again and underline the words in the first column used in the dialogues.
- Ask students to use the context and clues in the dialogues to guess the meaning of each word and match the word with its definition.
- Call on 1-2 students to write the answer on the board and check students’ answers.
- Ask the whole class to read these words.

Consolidation
(8 minutes) 
Discussion:
- Ask student to discuss the following question in group of three or four:
“What can student use computer for?”
- Teacher elicits two ways to answer the question “What for?’:

(1 minute)
- Ask students to learn by heart the new words and practise making some sentences with them.
