“Would”

We can use “would” to describe repeated actions or habits from the past. For example:

a) When I was younger, I would get up early every morning.

b) I would go riding on my bicycle every day during the summer holidays.

“Would”

“Used to”
We can also use “used to” to describe repeated actions or habits from the past. For
example:
a) When I was younger, I used to get up early every morning.
b) I used to go riding on my bicycle every day during the summer holidays.
c) She used to go swimming on sunny days.
d) He used to lie when he got into trouble.
However, we can also use “used to” to describe past states and past situations that no
longer exist (as opposed to repeated past habits or actions). “Would” is not possible in
these cases.
a) I used to have a Porsche. (In this case, you cannot say, “I would have a Porsche”.)
b) He used to be fat. (In this case, you cannot say, “I would be fat”.)
c) There used to be a church here. (In this case, you cannot say, “There would be a
church here”.)
“Would” & “Used to” – A Comparison
So, what’s the difference? Both “would” and “used to” can be used to describe
repeated actions from the past. However, “used to” can also be used to describe a past
state or a past situation that no longer exists.
