Today, we are going to practice some skills related to communication and study about family life in different cultures through: Unit 1: Family life Period 8 - Lesson 7: Communication and culture It will be very interesting. Don’t you think? Anyway, are you ready to start the lesson? 3. Slide 3: Introduction the topic and content of the lesson - As we know, family is very important part of our life. It helps us to shape our life. It teaches us the value of love, affection, care, truthfulness, self-confidence and provides us favorable conditions as well as belief which are necessary to get success in life. - Family is a place where you can be yourself. This is where you are completely tension free and everyone is there to help you. Family encourages you when you are surrounded by problems. It helps you survive through tough times and bring joy and happiness into life. - It is wonderful that family members live together in peace and harmony. To achieve this, each member of the family must be aware of the duties and responsibilities. - Nowadays, father, mother, and children in the family, share almost the housework. Performing the roles expected of each member can lead to family harmony and happiness. - Family lifestyles of one culture may differ from those of other cultures. But we can not deny the fact that family is your blood and they are the people who accept you for who you are, who would do anything to see you smile and who love you no matter what. Family is one and the only place where your life begins and love never ends. 4. Contents of the lesson Through this topic about family life, we will study our today lesson: Communication and culture. This lesson is divided into two sections: + The first one: Communication. You are going to describe pictures, listen and talk about the roles of the wife and the husband in the family life. There will be three contents in this part. First: Describing pictures ; Second: Listening ; And third: Discussion. + Then, the second one: Culture. You will have a chance to discover differences between Singapore and Vietnamese cultures about family life. There will be also three contents in this part. First: Presentation the topic ; Second: Reading the texts ; Third: Comparing and conclusion. 5. Objectives of the lesson Now, let me show you the objectives of the lesson! There are four aims in this lesson. First: objectives about knowledge ; Second: about skills ; Third: about attitudes ; fourth: about abilities gained. First: objectives about knowledge After the lesson, students will be able to: - Describe the pictures and give messages from them. - Listen and answer the questions. - Make small discussions about roles of husband and wife in the family life today. - Understand different family lifestyles in different cultures. Second: about skills - Listening: Students will listen to the TV talk show and have to find out who said what in the show. - Speaking: Students will exchange opinions about roles of husband and wife in the family life. - Reading: Students will read about family lifestyles in Singapore and Viet Nam. - Comparing: Students will compare family lifestyles of two different cultures, then analyse and synthesize these contents of the texts. Third: about attitudes - Students will get some motivation in learning English. - Students will be aware of sharing household chores in their family. - Students will be aware of preserving and promoting valuable features of Vietnamese culture as well as learning from good modern values of different cultures in the world. Fourth: about abilities gained - Self-studying ability - Communication ability - Language ability Slide 6: Look at the pictures and answer the questions Now, we will go! This is the first section: Communication: Who does what in your family? Let’s start this part with describing pictures! 1. Describing pictures Would you please look at the pictures and answer the questions about them! You have to answer 4 questions. Slides 7, 8, 9 , 10 ( Cac cau hoi tuong tac) Slide 11: The first message Well done! You have finished answering questions. And now, we are going to talk about the messages from those pictures. Our screen is going to help you understand everything. The first message is that We should do our share of housework willingly because the fact that if everyone contributes, the burden is less and everyone can have some time to relax. Slide 12: The second message Let’s see the second message: When families share household chores, it is good for them as individuals and good for all the relationships within the family. Slide 13: The third message Let’s take a look at the third one: When everyone works together on household chores, it creates a positive atmosphere for the family and sets a good example for the children. Slide 14: The fourth message And the fourth message from those pictures is that: Every member of the family should do some kind of household work, considering his or her age and health condition, and contribute to making the home a beautiful and happy place to live in. What about you? Can you give your opinion from those pictures? You can now! Slide 15: Conclusion. What are the benefits of sharing housework in the family? In conclusion, through sharing housework, each of the members in the family can enjoy at least four benefits: People have time to relax, Family members are more close-knit, People feel happy, Parents set a good example to their children Slide 16: 2. Listening Then, in the next content of the Communication part, we are going to listen to the TV talk show and find out who said what. Are you ready to listen and do the activities? Okey! Right now, you will listen to the TV talk show for the first time and answer some global questions: Slides 17, 18, 19: Students answer the three questions Slide 20: Read the statements from a to f You have just answered some global questions after the first time of listening. Have you known the topic of this TV talk show? Have you noticed some new words in it? So now, you have to read the statements from a to f carefully and find out the new words if necessary. a. Women also work to share the household financial burden with their husbands. b. Homemaking can’t only be the job of the wife. c. A woman’s job is to look after everybody in the family and take care of the house. d. Both husband and wife should join hands to provide for the family and to make it happy. e. In the family, the husband is the provider. f. Women’s roles have changed. Slide 21 - 26 : Vocabulary Let’s look at some new words in order to understand the whole content of this TV talk show! The screen is going to help you understand everything 1. Burden (noun) /ˈbɜːdən/ -> Household financial burden (noun phrase) : The first word is “burden”. What does it mean? It means: “something difficult or unpleasant that you have to deal with or worry about”. And we have a noun phrase “household financial burden” that means: “burden related to money in a family” 2. Homemaking (n) / ˈhəʊmˌmeɪ.kɪŋ / Homemaking. It is a noun. What does it means? It means: “the management of a household” 3. Join hands (v): /dʒɔɪn hændz / The next word: “join hands” that means: “to unite with other person or groups, work together” 4. Provider (noun) /prəˈvaɪ.dər/ The next word: “provider”. It is a noun that means: “someone who gives others something that they need” 5. Neat (adjective) /niːt/ And the last one: “neat”. It means: “tidy, with everything in its place” Slide 26: Read these new words again: And now, listen and read these new words again: (two times for each word) Household financial burden (n) : Homemaking (n) : Join hands (v): Provider (n) : Neat (adj) : One more time ( one time for each word) Slide 27: Checking the vocabulary Let’s check your vocabulary! Match the words in column A with their meaning in column B. You have 3 minutes! Slide 28: Listen to the TV talk show. Who said what? Now, listen carefully again and find out who said each of those statements. Slide 29 : Answering 2 questions Slide 30: Listen again and check your answers Well done! You have listened and completed the activity. Now, let’s listen to the TV talk show again and check your answer! Slide 31: 3. Discussion Let’s move to the Discussion part! Work in groups. Discuss the questions. Then, report your group’s opinions to the class. When you study this part at class, you can work in group of three or four students to discuss these questions. Refer back to the ideas in Activity 2: Listening, but you can also express your opinions freely. When your group members finish discussing the questions, one representative report your group’s opinion to the class. Slide 32: Here are some answers as examples! Answer 1: Our group agree with Mr. Nguyen Nam, husband and wife should have a similar role. They should share housework, parenting, homemaking, financial burden. In our family, our parents share all the work and they are happy with that. Answer 2: Our group agree with Ms. Mai Lan, men’s and women’s roles in the family have become similar. Husbands and wives should work together on household chores. It creates a positive atmosphere for the family and sets a good example for the children. What about you? Presentation the topic Now, we are going to move to the second section of the lesson: Culture Before we read the two texts about family life in Singapore and Viet Nam – the central part of the Culture section, please look at the pictures and answer some questions about them Slide 34, 35 : Answering questions Slide 36: Lead-in Well done for answering questions about the pictures! Do you know the name of each type of these families? + The first family, which contains only 2 generations: parents and children, is called “nuclear family”. + The second family, which contains 3 generations or even 4 generations: great-grandparents, grandparents, parents and children, is called “extended family”. Slide 37: 2. Reading the text and find out new words Now, let’s have a look at the two texts about family life in Singapore and in Viet Nam to get information about family life in two different cultures. Through reading, you have a chance to compare features of Viet Nam culture with those of another country. First of all, let’s scan the texts and find out some new words! Do you know any? Slides 38-47: Vocabulary 1. Single-parent homes (noun) = single-parent families : The first word: “Single-parent homes”. It means: “families in which a mother or father bringing up their child or children without a partner. 2. Nursery school (noun) /ˈnɜː.səriˌskuːl/ = kindergarten or preschool : The second word: “nursery school”. It means: “a school for children between the ages of about two and five” 3. Child-minder (noun) /ˈtʃaɪldˌmaɪn.dər/ : a person whose job is to take care of other people's children in her or his own home. The third one: “Child-minder”. It means: a person whose job is to take care of other people's children in her or his own home. 4. Nursing home (noun) /ˈnɜː.sɪŋ ˌhəʊm/ : The next word: “Nursing home”. That is a place where very old people who are ill live and receive medical treatment and care 5. Collaborate ( verb ) /kəˈlabəreɪt/ : Work jointly on an activity or project. 6. Parent Support Group (noun) /səˈpɔːt ˌɡruːp/ : What does it mean: “Parent Support Group” . It means: “a group of people who have had similar experiences, especially difficult ones, and who provide help to parents”. - Parent support groups are a great way to meet other parents for practical and emotional support. Most support groups are set up and run by parents and carers of children with additional needs. Some professionals and organisations, particularly children centres, run their own groups. 7. Parent Teacher Association (noun) /ˌpeə.rəntˈtiː.tʃər ə.səʊ.siˌeɪ.ʃən / It means: “an organization run by teachers and the parents of children at a school that tries to help the school, especially by organizing activities that raise money for it”. 8. Generation (noun) /ˌdʒenəˈreɪʃən/ : all the people of about the same age within a society or within a particular family: 9. Great-grandparents (noun) :The mother and father of one’s grandparents. 10. Ungrateful (adjective) /ʌnˈɡreɪt.fəl/ : not showing or expressing any thanks Opposite : grateful Slide 48: Read these new words again Now, are you ready for reading these new words again? Listen and repeat after me! Match the words in column A with their meanings in column B. You have 3 minutes! Slide 50: Read the questions After reading each of the texts, you have to answer 4 questions! 1. What type of family is popular in the country? 2. Who takes care of young children when their parents are at work? 3. Who looks after elderly parents? 4. How do the parents contribute to educating their children? Slide 51: Answering the question 1 On the screen, you can see the first text about family life in Singapore. Would you please read the text and answer each of the questions above! Singapore In Singapore today, people tend to live in nuclear families which consist of parents and children. Families in Singapore are getting smaller. Many children even grow up in single-parent homes. In most Singaporean families, both parent work. Very young children go to nursery schools or stay home with a child-minder when their parents are at work. Old people usually live in their own homes or a nursing home if they cannot look after themselves. Singaporean parents try to spend their free time collaborating with the school in educating their children through the activities of the Parent Support Group or Parent Teacher Association. You have to base on the passage to give the correct answers. Clearly, you should read the questions carefully to find out key words, then you return to the passage to look for information for the answers. Let’s start with the question number 1: What type of family is popular in the country? The phrase “in the country” means “in Singapore” The key words in this question is “what type of family”. So, we can easily find the information related to this question in the first sentence of the paragraph. And the answer is that : It is nuclear family which is popular in Singapore today. Slide 52: Answering the question 2 Next, the second question: Who takes care of young children when their parents are at work? Where is the information in the passage for this question? It belongs to the third and the fourth lines of the paragraph. So, we can give the answer as follows: They go to nursery schools or stay home with a child-minder. Slide 53: Answering the question 3 The third question: Who looks after elderly parents? The phrase “elderly parents” is similar in meaning to the phrase “old people” in the paragraph. So, we can see the answer for this question in the next sentence. And the answer is that: They usually live in their own homes or a nursing home. Slide 54: Answering the question 4 The last question ask about the role of parents in educating their children. The information related to this matter belongs to the last sentence of the paragraph. So we can answer as follows: They take part in the activities of the Parent Support Group or Parent Teacher Association. So now, let’s check all your answers! Do you have correct answers? They are not very difficult. Are they? Slide 55: Read about Viet Nam Then, you will read the second text about family life in Viet Nam and answer the questions Viet Nam The extended family, which consists of three or even four generations – great grandparents, grandparents, parents and children – is still very popular in Viet Nam. In most Vietnamese families, when both parents work, young children stay home and are looked after by their grandparents or great- grandparents. On the other hand, it is the duty of the young people to take care of their elderly parents. A person will be considered ungrateful if he/she does not take good care of his/her parents or grandparents. Vietnamese parents often spend their free time helping their children with their homework or giving them advice on behaviour . Slide 56, 57: Completing the table Now, let’s answer the questions about family life in Viet Nam by completing the table below. You have at least 5 minutes! Slide 58: Comparing and conclusion Well done! You have read the two texts and finished answering the questions! Through these activities, let’s compare the different family lifestyles in two cultures + The first aspect related to the type of family: It is the nuclear family that is popular in Singapore, but in Viet Nam, the extended family is still popular. + The second aspect related to taking care of young children: In Singapore, they go to nursery school or stay home with a child-minder when their parents are at work; but in Viet Nam, young children are looked after by their grandparents at home. + The third aspect about looking after elderly parents: In Singapore, they usually live in their own homes or a nursing home ; but in Viet Nam, it is the responsibility of the children to take care of their elderly parents. + The last aspect about educating the children: In Singapore, parents take part in the activities of the Parent Support Group or Parent Teacher Association in order to collaborate with the school in educating their children; but Vietnamese parents often spend their free time helping their children with their homework or giving them advice on behaviour . Slide 59: Knowledge of the lesson Here are all the main parts of knowledge that you have studied in the lesson today. In Communication section, there are three subsections: Describing pictures, Listening and Discussion For describing pictures, you have looked the pictures, answered the questions and given some messages For listening, you have listened and answered some global questions; then you have learned some new words and listened again to do the activity. For discussion, you should work in group to discuss the questions, then report your group’s opinions to the class. And in Culture section: Reading and Comparing - For this content, you have looked at the pictures and answered questions. Then you have read two texts about cultures. Finally, you have compared Singapore and Vietnamese cultures by doing the activity Slide 60: Types of exercise And here are some types of exercise to consolidate Vocabulary about the chores in family Listening about the family Comparing family lifestyles of two cultures Slide 61: Exercise 1 Slide 62: Exercise 2 Slide 63: Exercise 3 Slide 64: Exercise 4 Slide 65: Life lesson 1 At the end of our lesson, I hope you will realize the importance of family in our life. “Family life contributes immensely to an individual’s happiness.
