Cụm từ này thường được dùng như một danh từ (chủ ngữ hoặc tân ngữ). Ex:The unemployed: người thất nghiệp.The homeless: người vô gia cư.The deaf: người điếc.The sick: người ốm.Khi the + adjective đóng vai trò là chủ ngữ trong câu thì động từ được chia ở hình thức số nhiều.
